January 13 BOE Minutes 2010

January 14, 2010

    The board met in regular session on January 13, 2010 at the Axtell School Gym in Axtell, Kansas.

    The meeting was called to order at 8:30 p.m. by Vice-President Jon Meybrunn.  The agenda was approved.

Administrative Reports:

    Supt. Bartkoski gave an update on the utility savings in the district; boiler repairs at Axtell and Bern and that the KSDE auditor will be in the district the week of January 18, 2010.

    Principal Brian Rottinghaus gave a report on the TVL tournament upcoming; state assessment testing is on going and Site Council information.

    Principal Rick Schnacker gave a report on the Winter Concert held, TVL activities and Site Council information. 

    Principal Bob Bartkoski shared the results of the Marshall County Food Pantry drive held at the Summerfield School.

Consent Agenda:

  • The January warrants were approved.
  • The Board of Education minutes were approved.
  • Mileage reimbursement rates of $.50 for the remainder of the 2009-10 school year were approved.

Old Business:

  • The board reviewed the latest financial update from Topeka as it pertains to school districts.  Consolidation options were discussed, no action was taken:
  • Remain USD 448
  • Consolidate with Sabetha
  • Consolidate with B&B
  • Consolidate with B&B and Sabetha
  • Consolidate with B&B, Sabetha and Nemaha Valley

USD 488 will continue to meet with area districts in the future to discuss consolidation options available for all districts.

A special meeting of the USD 488 board of education will be held at Axtell High School on January 20, 2010 at 7 p.m.

New Business:

  • Make up time for snow days was approved as per the negotiated agreement:
  1. Cancel the 3 remaining scheduled early release days
  2. Add 30 minutes a day to the student day from February 1 through March 5, 2010.  The student day will be from 8:10 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
  • Brian Deters and Jane Koch were appointed as board negotiators for the 2010-11 school year.

Executive Session:

  • Executive sessions were held concerning matters of negotiations; non-elected personnel; the principals’ evaluations and student issues. 

    The meeting was adjourned at 11:30 p.m. The next regular meeting of the board will be on January 20, 2010 at 7:00 p.m. in Axtell.
