On October 15 Axtell High School's National Honor Society members sponsored an assembly for the students of Summerfield Elementary and St. Michael's School. Dawn Osterhaus and Danielle Dalinghaus, respiratory therapists from Nemaha Valley Community Hospital, gave a very informative anti-tobacco presentation. After the presentation the students received goodie bags from Dawn and Danielle while members of NHS gave each student an "Aim to Be Tobacco Free" mini football and scented pencils. Students were also encouraged by NHS members to sign a pledge card promising to remain tobacco free.
The assembly was made possible by grant of $1,250 from Kansas Tobacco Free Coalition. TASK is a youth movement against tobacco and was initially formed in 1998 as an offshoot of the Tobacco Free Kansas Coalition. Local TASK groups work to inform teens of the danger of tobacco and the impact of both short and long-term use of tobacco, particularly for young people.
