June BOE Minutes
June 12, 2009
The board met in regular session on June 8, 2009 at the district office in Axtell, KS.
The meeting was called to order at 7:00 p.m. by President Brian Deters. The agenda was approved.
Administrative Reports:
Supt. Bartkoski informed the board of the progress made with the electrical upgrades; roof repair information, ceiling repair in the Math and English rooms at Bern High School.
Principal Brian Rottinghaus gave a report covering state track results, summer camp information, Site Council overview from 2008-09 and summer building work underway.
Principal Rick Schnacker gave a report covering state track results, summer camp information, Migrant Summer School information, the lighting project and weight room project progress and Site Council overview from 2008-09 at the Bern School.
Principal Bob Bartkoski shared information on the last day of school, spring music concert and band room flooding and carpet repair at the Summerfield School.
Consent Agenda:
- The June warrants were approved.
- The May Board of Education minutes were approved.
- Accepted the resignation of Lucus Dalinghaus as Bern assistant boys basketball coach.
- Accepted the resignation of Jayson Tynon as Axtell head girls and junior high girls’ basketball coach.
Old Business:
- Meal prices for the 2009-10 school year were approved as follows: K-12 Breakfast - $1.20; K-6 Lunch - $1.85; 7-12 Lunch - $1.95; Adult Lunch - $2.95; Adult Breakfast - $1.55 and extra milk will be $.35.
New Business:
- The board reviewed the proposed 2009-10 student handbook. No action was taken on this item.
- The Bern Weight Room policy was approved and will be posted at the Bern School.
- Approved reducing the number of JV competitions for the 2009-10 school year.
- Approved authorizing the superintendent to make end of year transfers to finish out the 2008-09 budget year.
Executive Session:
Executive sessions were held concerning personnel, negotiations and student issues.

Bern School– Curtis Gutsch – head football, head boys basketball, Freshman class co-sponsor; Seth Garinger – assistant football; Tony Howser – head track, Senior class co-sponsor, JH Scholars Bowl, National Honor Society; Pam Walker – assistant track, Junior class co-sponsor, Bern FCCLA; Trent Platt – Activities Director, Freshman class co-sponsor; Lucus Dalinghaus – Jr. high boys football, basketball and track, Annual; Becky Boehmer – Jr. high girls volleyball, basketball and track; June Keeton – Pep Club/Cheerleader co-sponsor; Martha Pearson – Pep Club/Cheerleader co-sponsor; Francine Haverkamp – Junior Class co-sponsor; Jana Strahm – Sophomore Class co-sponsor; Katie Sextro – Sophomore class co-sponsor, Stuco co-sponsor, co-sponsor high school Scholars Bowl, Forensics; Gena Fritz – Drama/Jr. Sr. Play, Stuco co-sponsor; Larry Meyer – high school Scholar’s Bowl co-sponsor.

- Approved employment of 12 month classified staff as follows: Axtell – Marian Hasenkamp, Donna Heinen, Linda Lattimer; Bern – Linda Backer, Leon Mosteller, Jackie Rokey; Summerfield – Rose Bernasek, Butch Renz; District Office – Carol Kuckelman, Ann Shaughnessy.
- Approved the 2009-10 Negotiated Agreement which includes continuing to pay for the full single coverage health insurance premium; Adding Future Business Leaders of America to the supplemental duties schedule with 3% of the base as the stipend; Freezing the base pay, step and column movement; Early dismissal on the first Friday of every month, students dismiss at 1:00 and staff at 2:30.
Superintendent Bartkoski presented plaques and recognized board members Rod Edelman, Alan Koch and Tom Smith for their years of service as board members and their dedication to the students of USD #488.
The meeting was adjourned at 9:20 p.m. The next regular meeting of the board will be on July 13, 2009 at the District Office.
